Overhead cranes at work in underground caverns at hydropower station

We once produced bridge cranes for hydroelectric power stations, but the customer did not explain the purpose of these bridge cranes in detail, and we did not ask further questions. We just produced them according to the standards based on the needs put forward by the customers. Recently we found a bridge crane case related to a hydroelectric power station. By learning more details, we can better provide solutions to customers when we face similar problems in the future.

How to install and work the overhead crane in the underground cave of the hydropower station

According to the information we received, this case involved the provision of maintenance and repair cranes for a huge underground cavern in a hydroelectric power project. The contract equipment includes the supply of two 150t/25t/5t x 18.7m double-girder workshop bridge cranes and a 25t x 5m double-girder semi-gantry crane to lift the main turbine for maintenance and repair work, which is a hydropower project in Malaysia.

The girders and other components were transported to site via trailer, but to enter the site, the trailer had to move in reverse for approximately 300m due to severe limitations in terms of manoeuvrability.

A heavy duty mobile crane was used to lift the crane girders, main hoists and auxiliary hoists. The installation took a few days and despite all challenges both cranes were successfully installed and load tested without any complications.

What we learned from this case

From this case, we saw the importance of equipment maintenance to hydroelectric power stations. From this perspective, we investigated some links where bridge cranes may be used in hydroelectric power stations.

Equipment installation: We know that hydroelectric power stations require the installation of many large-scale equipment, such as turbines, generators, transformers, etc. These devices are often very heavy and require the use of a crane for lifting and installation. Bridge cranes and gantry cranes can easily move these equipment and place them accurately in their designated locations.

Material transportation: Hydroelectric power stations are usually built in mountainous or remote areas, making material transportation difficult. Cranes can transport heavy supplies and materials from down the mountain to the power station construction site, greatly saving manpower and material resources.

Repairs and Maintenance: Hydroelectric power station equipment requires regular repairs and maintenance. In these situations, overhead cranes can be used to move equipment so workers can more easily perform repairs and inspections.

Waste equipment disposal: When equipment in a hydroelectric power station needs to be replaced or scrapped, gantry cranes can be used to transport the waste equipment away from the site for further processing or recycling.

I believe that as our understanding of various industries deepens, our R&D department will make crane products of better quality and closer to customer needs. If a hydroelectric power station needs bridge cranes or gantry cranes or other types of cranes, you can contact us directly. We will deeply integrate our professional knowledge with the needs of our customers and work together to create a win-win situation.
